Finding My Place in a Church Family: From Visitor to Welcomer

When I first walked into my church, I felt both nervous and hopeful, wondering if I'd find a place to belong. Now, after being welcomed with open arms, I'm stepping into new roles, from joining the welcoming team to hosting a study group in my home. It’s a journey of learning, loving, and giving back to the community that embraced me. Here’s how this experience is helping me grow, connect, and be part of something bigger.

Faith and Family

I've only been part of my church for a short time, but it already feels like this is the right church for me. Every time I step inside, there's this warm, welcoming vibe—people genuinely seem to care. For the first time, I'm really starting to understand what it could mean to be part of a church family, and it’s such a gift.

Recently, I was asked if I'd like to join the welcoming team on Sundays, and honestly, I’m looking forward to it! I still remember how nervous I felt those first few visits, wondering if I'd fit in. But every time, someone was there to greet me with a smile, making me feel like I belonged. Now, I get the chance to be that person at the door—a friendly face reminding others that they're seen and welcomed, just like I was. It brings to mind that verse in Romans 12:10, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.” For me welcoming is more than just a friendly gesture; it’s a way to show the same care that was shown to me.

In the new year I also hope to start attending a weekly study group. I’ve never done anything like this before, but the idea of gathering in a small group in someones home to dig into God’s Word together is something I’m really excited about. It reminds me of how the early believers would meet in each other’s homes, sharing their lives and faith. Acts 2:42 talks about how they devoted themselves to “the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” That’s the kind of unity I hope to be a part of—an open, welcoming space to learn and grow together.

Being invited to serve, is helping me understand what it means to be part of the Body of Christ. Even though I’m still finding my footing, I really feel like I could have a place here. 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 talks about how the Body of Christ has many parts, each one unique and valuable. It says, “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.” That passage encourages me because it reminds me that we all bring something special, even as newcomers. It’s amazing to realise that I’m not just attending—I’m already part of something bigger. Galatians 5:13 also speaks to me: “Serve one another humbly in love.” Serving isn’t about getting credit or doing it because we feel we have to. It’s about letting love lead us.

I’m still learning and finding my way, but I feel ready for these next steps. I’m looking forward to giving back and sharing the warmth and kindness that first drew me in. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us, “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together…but encouraging one another.” That’s my hope—to welcome, encourage, and serve with love, just like others have done for me, that we can connect more deeply, as we are one in Christ.
