Why Reading the Bible is Essential for New Believers
As a new believer, opening the Bible can feel overwhelming. But the Bible is more than just a book; it’s His-Story—God’s story of love, redemption, and purpose. It’s the story of His relationship with humanity, and, amazingly, it’s where we discover our own place in that story. Connecting with God’s Story and Growing in Faith
When I first became a believer, everyone encouraged me to start reading the Bible, but I didn’t really know why. I quickly realised that the Bible wasn’t just a religious text—it was my way to get to know God and understand what it means to live a life of faith. As new believers, we’re like seedlings taking root, and reading the Bible is what helps those roots grow deep and strong. Here’s why reading the Bible is so important, and a few ways you can start this journey.
1. It’s How We Get to Know God
Imagine trying to get to know a friend without ever hearing their story or understanding their values. Reading the Bible is our way of getting to know God personally. Through stories of His faithfulness, His guidance, and His love, we begin to understand who God is. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” In other words, God’s character, heart, and truth are revealed to us in His Word. As we read, we’re not just learning facts; we’re growing in a relationship with Him.
2. It Helps Us Understand Ourselves and Our Purpose
The Bible isn’t just about understanding God; it’s also about understanding ourselves. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that “the word of God is alive and active… it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” When we read, we see ourselves in the stories and the teachings. We gain insight into our own lives, our struggles, and our purpose. God’s Word helps us see areas where we need growth, but it also encourages us and shows us our potential in Christ.
3. It Guides Us Through Life’s Challenges
Life can be confusing, especially when you’re navigating faith for the first time. The Bible provides us with a source of wisdom and guidance. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” When we’re unsure of what to do, struggling with decisions, or facing difficult situations, the Bible gives us timeless wisdom and promises to lean on. It’s like a personal guidebook for walking through life with faith and trust in God.
4. It Strengthens Our Faith and Provides Encouragement
Reading the Bible regularly strengthens our faith and builds our trust in God. Romans 10:17 says, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” The more we read, the more our faith grows as we see God’s promises in action and witness His faithfulness through history. It’s also full of encouragement; when we’re feeling low, there are words of hope, promises of God’s love, and reminders of His presence with us.
5. It Connects Us to the Larger Story of Faith
As new believers, it can feel like we’re starting from scratch, but reading the Bible reminds us that we’re part of a much larger story. We see how God worked in the lives of people like Abraham, Moses, Ruth, and Paul, and realize that we’re connected to the same story. Hebrews 12:1 calls it “a great cloud of witnesses.” We’re part of a family of faith that stretches back thousands of years, and reading the Bible makes us feel connected to that legacy.
Practical Tips for New Believers to Start Reading the Bible
If you’re new to reading the Bible, here are a few tips to help you get started:
Start with the Gospels: The Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—are a great place to start because they introduce us to the life, teachings, and love of Jesus. They’re central to our faith and help us understand the foundation of what we believe.
Read a Little Each Day: You don’t have to read chapters at a time. Even a few verses each day can make a big difference. It’s about consistency, not quantity. Try starting with a few minutes each morning or before bed.
Pray Before You Read: Ask God to speak to you through His Word and help you understand what you’re reading. This makes the experience feel more personal and invites God into your time.
Use a Study Guide or Devotional: Many study guides are designed to help new believers understand the Bible. A good guide can help explain difficult passages and give you background on what you’re reading.
Join a Bible Study Group: Reading with others can make the Bible feel more approachable and give you the chance to discuss questions and insights. Look for a small group at your church or even an online study.
Don’t Worry About What You Don’t Understand: The Bible can be challenging, and that’s okay! Focus on what speaks to you, and trust that understanding will come over time. Even the parts that feel confusing now will often make sense as you grow in faith.
Building a Foundation in Faith
As a new believer, reading the Bible isn’t about checking off a box; it’s about building a relationship with God and laying down roots in your faith. It’s a process, and it may feel slow or challenging at times, but it’s one of the most rewarding parts of following Jesus. Through the ups and downs, God’s Word will be your anchor, your encouragement, and your source of strength. Trust that each time you open the Bible, God is drawing you closer and helping you grow in ways you might not even realise yet. So take it one page, one verse at a time, and let God’s Word guide you on this incredible journey.
