Finding Your Church Home
Finding the right church and denomination can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re new to faith or when you’re still figuring out what you believe. Walking into a church for the first time can be a little intimidating, and then there’s the added challenge of understanding the different denominations—Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Pentecostal…the list goes on. I remember feeling like each one had its own language, its own customs, and sometimes even slightly different beliefs. It’s confusing! But over time, I’ve learned that this journey can also be an opportunity to grow in understanding and find a place where your faith feels at home.
Here are a few things I found helpful along the way:
1. Start with Prayer and an Open Heart
The best advice I received when starting out was to begin with prayer, asking God for guidance and wisdom. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” This has been a comfort to me, knowing that even in the midst of my confusion, God can lead me to where I need to be. Pray for clarity, for patience, and for the ability to keep an open heart.
2. Understand What Each Denomination Emphasises
One thing that helped me was learning the basics about each denomination. Some, like Baptists, place a strong focus on Scripture and personal faith in Jesus. Others, like Methodists, emphasise grace, community, and service. Pentecostals often celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit in a very expressive way, while Catholics have a long history of sacraments, tradition, and structure. I found that the differences often come down to what each group prioritises or how they express their faith. Understanding these distinctions can help you see where your own beliefs align and what aspects of faith are most meaningful to you.
It might feel a bit like “church shopping,” but it’s okay to visit different services to get a sense of each denomination’s culture and worship style. Remember, you’re not being unfaithful by looking around—you’re exploring, learning, and figuring out where you can best grow and serve.
3. Look for Solid Biblical Teaching and Community
One of the most important aspects of any church, regardless of denomination, is its commitment to biblical teaching. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” When looking at different churches, pay attention to how they teach the Bible. Do they encourage you to read and study Scripture for yourself? Do their teachings align with the Bible’s message?
It’s also important to find a church that feels like a real community. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to “not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” Look for a place where people are welcoming, where they genuinely care about each other, and where you feel encouraged in your walk with God.
4. Consider the Church’s Approach to Worship
Worship styles vary a lot between denominations and even from church to church. Some churches have traditional hymns with organs, others have contemporary bands, and some have a mix of both. Think about what helps you connect with God. Personally, I found that I’m drawn to a more modern style of worship, but I still appreciate traditional services from time to time. If music and worship style are important to you, consider trying a few churches to see what resonates with you.
It’s also good to remember that worship is ultimately about honouring God, not about our preferences. So, if you find a church that aligns with your beliefs and has a supportive community, you may be able to grow in appreciation for their worship style, even if it’s different from what you’re used to.
5. Ask Questions and Don’t Be Afraid to Try Different Churches
If you’re unsure about something, don’t hesitate to ask questions! Most pastors and church members will be more than happy to explain their beliefs and answer any questions you have. You can ask about their views on certain topics, their church’s mission, and what they value as a community. Visiting a few different churches might feel strange, but it’s okay to take your time. Finding the right church is a process, and there’s no need to rush.
6. Remember That No Church Is Perfect
One thing I’ve had to remind myself of is that no church is perfect. Every church is made up of people—imperfect, sometimes messy people. Colossians 3:13 tells us to “bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Being part of a church means learning to show grace, even when things aren’t exactly how you’d like them to be. Look for a church that feels like a healthy place to grow, and remember that God can work through imperfect situations and people.
7. Follow the Peace of God
Finally, listen to the peace that God gives you. Philippians 4:7 talks about “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.” If you visit a church and feel a deep sense of peace, that’s something worth paying attention to. The right church should feel like a place where you can breathe, where your spirit feels at home, and where you feel connected to God and others.
In the End, Trust God’s Leading
Finding the right church and denomination can be a journey, and it may take time. But as you seek God and trust His guidance, you’ll find a place where you can grow, serve, and be part of His family. Remember that you don’t have to have it all figured out right away. Take your time, enjoy the journey, and trust that God will lead you to the right place in His perfect timing.
